Why should you sealcoat your Asphalt?

Asphalt Sealcoating restores the original black look to your asphalt. Not only does sealcoating drastically improve the overall aesthetics of your asphalt, it also preserves it.

By creating a protective seal, asphalt sealcoating protects the asphalt from oxidation from the sun. Did you ever notice how blacktop changes colors? It starts out black, then turns brown, then it turns gray and finally it ends up white. This change in coloration is a direct by-product of oxidation. When asphalt oxidizes it loses a great deal of its ability to expand and contract, which leads to cracking in extreme conditions.

Another important aspect of asphalt sealcoating is its’ ability to protect asphalt from the degradation caused by petroleum products such as gasoline and motor oil. Petroleum based products have the same chemical composition as the binder in the asphalt, which leads to a bonding reaction. This bonding deteriorates the binder which results in raveling of the asphalt. If your asphalt is losing stone, this is raveling. Asphalt sealcoating helps with stone retention. Not all sealcoat materials protect against petroleum based products. To learn more read “asphalt sealcoating materials explained”.

We also recommend that you read our article “should I sealcoat my asphalt”. This article answers the age old question whether asphalt should be sealed or not. It takes a deeper look into the belief that asphalt sealcoating does not allow the asphalt to “breathe”. This is just one of several informative articles located in our Asphalt Sealcoating Facts page.
